About Derby Love Network

Derby Love Network (DLN) is operated by Michi-chan, a name that has been a staple (based on who you ask) of journalism in modern roller derby since 2007. You can learn more about Michi-chan herself, by visiting iwantmorederby.com.

As Michi-chan Sports (MCS) is made aware of roller derby bouts/games that are coming up, we put them in the database or as we call it, putting them on the "radar". This means that we may help promote these upcoming events as well as report on final scores. This normally happens on the MCS Facebook and Instagram pages.

Most of the data on this site is manually curated based on information received by MCS and information gathtered through various social media sources.

Beware of scammers and "weirdo links"

In sports, we are aware of various types of scammers. There are those out there who put up fake tournament pages just to try to scam potential fans and steal money under the guise of selling tickets. There are also "stream-booters" who take a legitmate YouTube or Twitch live stream for a derby league and then re-transmits the video over their own channel in order to deprive the original content creator (host league) of the viewing hours and potential monetization the video would otherwise be entitled to. Michi-chan Sports does not engage in anything like that and that kind of behavior pisses us off too.

Leagues may advise people to only watch through official sources and yes, that is good advice, however, watching through Derby Love Network is the same as watching through the official source. Derby Love Network may also include links to tickets. These links are manually curated and as such, do point to the actual ticketing website that was provided by the league in their announcement about the event.

Derby Love Network works much different than that in order to support the leagues

One of the main goals of the Derby Love Network is to provide a single starting point where you can find live roller derby on the weekend. I do a lot of research during the week, ask a lot of questions and wrote a bunch of tech to be able to provide a lineup of live events that you can choose from, regardless of whether they are broadcasting on YouTube or Twitch.

Instead of stream-booting, the Derby Love Network uses the built-in embedding functionality that both YouTube and Twitch provides that permits videos to be viewed on third party websites, such as the Derby Love Network.

When a video is watched on the Derby Love Network platform, it is treated no differently than if you were watching the video directly on the YouTube or Twitch page itself. All analytics for viewing hours go directly to the original content creator/league. Michi-chan Sports gets no monetization or credit in any way for the embedding of these videos. We do it only for one reason, for the betterment of modern roller derby. In addition to being able to watch the event or pre-recorded video through the Derby Love Network platform, there is a link on the watch page that permits the user to bypass the Derby Love Network and watch the video coverage directly on the content creator's/host league's YouTube or Twitch channel. If we were truly scammers, we would not offer something like that. We don't care whether you watch using the Derby Love Network or directly on the content creator's/host league's YouTube/Twitch, we just want you to watch.

Watching videos on Derby Love Network

To get the best experience from Derby Love Network, please make sure that you are already logged into YouTube and Twitch. If you are properly logged in, you will be able to not just watch the live coverage, but you can also participate on the chat. There is also a place where you can subscribe to the content creator's/host league's YouTube channel as well as to Michi-chan Sports' YouTube channel. If you want to use other features of the channel such as putting a "like" on the video or using YouTube Super Chat, then you will need to bypass Derby Love Network and click to watch the video directly on YouTube/Twitch.

Note that at times, the video may first come up muted. This is due to restrictions that are built into your browser. You can use the controls on the screen to unmute the audio. As you continue to watch videos here at the Derby Love Network, the browser will turn up the audio volume by default.

At this time, we do not yet have the ability to display video content on mobile browsers. This is functionality that we are working on.

Wouldn't this be copyright infringement?

No. Several courts have already reached decisions that a website posting an embedded video from another site that has the rights to distribute that video does not constitute copyright infringement as an embedded video is seen as an "enhanced link" to the original content.

Information from YouTube regarding advertising/monetization on embedded videos.

Leagues can prevent retransmission by disabling the embedding function when setting up a live stream or uploading a video. We strongly recommend against that for the good of derby.

Michi-chan Sports has been a member of the modern roller derby family since 2007. We are a trusted name. We are only out here for one reason, TO PROMOTE ROLLER DERBY!

AI Disclosure

The Derby Love Network content does not contain any art or music created through generative AI.

The network infrastructure that brings this site as well as other Michi-chan content incudes a "back end" where all of the processing takes place and a "front end", which is the "window dressing" to present this specific derbylove.net website.

While the coding done to create the front end website of derbylove.net was assisted with an AI-based tool, the entire back end operation, including the database, back end tools used to maintain the data, tools to create social media graphics, and APIs used to deliver the data from that database to derbylove.net were 100% human designed and coded with no AI involvement.

No editorial content including news stories, blog posts, social media entries or score gathering is done using AI. In other words, you will not see any AI generated news reports. If the Michi needs to write a story, she will write it on her own, typos and all. While we may use APIs to gather game results, those APIs are human designed and are not considered AI (though they may be mistaken for that). We don't let the computer have free reign on what we gather.

Our localized Michi-chan Sports sites, iwantmorederby.com and DMVDerby.com are commercially available software packages and while we cannot attest to how they were developed, we can attest that we have not contributed any AI based content or structure to those websites.
